Jacob has twelve sons, who become the ancestors of the twelve tribes of Israel. The most prominent of these sons is Joseph, who becomes adviser to the King of Egypt

The Israelites in Egypt and The Wilderness

The descendants of Jacob are enslaved in Egypt.









Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt.
The Israelites wander in the wilderness. During this time Moses receives the Law on Mount Sinai.

 

1250 BCE - 1030 BCE  

The Conquest and Settlement of Canaan

1250:   Joshua leads the first stage of the invasion of Canaan.

Israel remains a loose confederation of tribes, and leadership is exercised by heroic figures known as the Judges.

The Ptolemies, descendants of one of Alexander's generals, who had been given the position of ruler over Egypt, rule Palestine.
The Seleucids, descendants of one of Alexander's generals, who had acquired the rule of Syria, rule Palestine.
Jewish revolt under Judas Maccabeus reestablishes Jewish independence. Judas' family and descendants, the Hasmoneans, rule Palestine.
The Roman general Pompey takes Jerusalem.
